BA3a - Female Sniper Design

Pictured above are some of the images I've collected to inspire me with the next designs. There are only images from League of Legends on the first board as I own The Art of Overwatch, (pictured below,) a book which gives me insights on the design stages and whys on each of the aspects included in the game. I used these two games, games which I know, as examples of what can be good or bad about class or character designs.

I then went online to google images of real life clothing that I could use in my creations. There would be many similarities between these clothings, my designs and those which have already been designed. In my notes there are small things to remind myself that I don't need to be afraid to try new or different things, and to hopefully not stray me off my path.

The stages of iteration I have gone through can be seen in these images. These are to do with the clothing and the weapons and their colours. When I was torn, I'd try out all the choices I couldn't decide between so I could have a better look and understanding of what would be better.

I wanted more winter-camouflage colours rather than the autumn colours which are common in cold climate. This is because this is essentially a survival trait to have, you'd want to blend in and not be easily seen while you are fighting, shooting or hiding, however you want to play it. So while the autumn colours are common and look nice in our world, it would not be very practical when it comes to being in the game.

Pictured left is a larger version of the figure and colours I picked in the end, with arrows indicating what things are and what type of material I'd like the pieces to be made of in hope that I would be able to convey them in the final painting.

I choose the two designs for the pistol and the sniper rifle that looked like they could be in a set together. Placing the colour combinations against the rough drawing of the figure gave me an idea of what it would look like close to the final painting.

I liked the grey and blue but it seemed to blend in too much with the piece, having too much blue around, so I preferred the near-white and black one as it gave more of a contrast to the piece as a whole. The dark grey and black would have been too dark for this. I hope that the other classes I create will not be too similar in weapon colours to the sniper ones.

BA3a - 2 Month Recap

It has been just over 2 months since my last entry onto BlogSpot. I'm currently at my family house, home for the holidays and still working. I'm not sure whether or not I'll be able to complete it all but if I stick to my schedule, it should be fine. I have things planned and written down and it should be ok.

Since my last post I had had a meeting with Mark, and had not attended any other sessions really.
Mark informed me that what I had drawn lacked a sense of direction, and he was right; I was just designing people and dressing them for no reason. While that made me feel as though 8 weeks had passed of this 3rd year and nothing had been done and I had to start all over, it wasn't the case. I had to go back, but I still had the hair iterations and the body shapes so it wasn't too bad. I also used it for painting practice, and I quite liked the way it turned out, and it was fun so it was okay.

It did put a downer on my mood and with how I am, it prevented me from being able to do things and so I lost a few days, but we never give up, so let's go.

So I'm going to use this blog entry to outline and explain all the things I've done up to creating the first character of the Female Sniper and then create separate posts for those -
I went back and thought about any scenarios which would place people against each other in a Battle Royale arena and cause them to fight against one another. An apocalyptic world or anything alike is too cliche for me but it is cliche because it makes sense, so I decided to go a similar route but not down the same path - a frozen world. A freak accident changed the world, lowered the temperatures, let water bodies freeze and moved the world into an ice age. There is snow and ice all around in the arctic tundra.

Choosing a frozen, cold environment allows me to build and create people with the body shapes and clothes fitting to the environment and do something different to the athletic, fit builds and possibly revealing or standard clothes that a lot of games have. (Revealing in the loosest sense.) But I didn't want to do that, so I opted for a different approach.
I researched what type of clothes and materials would be most common in these conditions, including what colours there were as well in winter clothing. I used examples of characters in games that I enjoyed to influence me and give me suggestions on what to do, what clothes and styles I'd like the classes to wear.

Below are examples of the revised Moodboards for the arctic conditions of the new world I've imagined. Please excuse the blinding red in the background - that's how I distinguished between these and the old versions. It does feel a lot better with a set direction to go in and also world in which to work in instead of just going in blindly, which was basically what I was doing

Year 3 BA3a - Character Iterations

Here are some iterations of each class I've decided to create - gender, clothing and hairstyles.
I have also created some colour swatches for these in preparation for my painting it.

I have left a week to do the weapons in between 2 sets of 2 weeks to paint and polish each class as I believe the weapons are pretty standard and it wouldn't take long as those are already relatively sorted out. Many of the weapons - in a realistic style - look very similar and it's good to have a consistency with the weapons so people can easily identify and know what they do.

I've been slacking since the beginning of this project really and I hate it, but as stupid as it sounds - life is hard. I mean I want to work and I'm looking forward to it - I just need to find the motivation and energy to do it but I think things seem to be okay.

Concept Art Task 2: Character - Brief B

After a difficult few weeks, I notice today that I have weekly tasks!
Now I remember it being said that we were to have these weekly tasks, and I should have known that they would start straight away, but honestly, I have barely any recollection of the past weeks. That would be worrying had/have I any time to worry about that, but I'm just going to keep soldiering on. This is the second task, meaning I've missed week one but I just need to keep going.

When I read both the briefs - a picture of this one came instantly to me:
I imagined a field as in a farmer's field, where my dwarf friend tends to the land - and he's not a stereotypical angry, dirty farmer with missing teeth you see in movies and they're pretty creepy and you're almost certain they're up to something, especially in horror movies or anything alike- the camera angles and lingering shots of them smirking certainly don't help. He's a more relaxed farmer who takes time out and shows the land and animals to kids on school trips and has a lovely sheepdog helping him. He tells all the children how to care for the cute animals and stays far away from how meat is made, and definitely doesn't show them, because that's just a bit too gory when you're a 10 year old. The key feature may be large teeth, but I just imagine that he's got a big smile, and it may seem as though I was describing a friendly old farmer, but perhaps this is a young adult and he just likes helping out his old dad with running the place. Now to put pen to paper - so to speak - more like tablet pen to... well tablet..

It is late but I just wanted to do something for 2nd week task.
I need to have more confidence in painting, using more contrasting and different colours, but that comes with practice and practice, which I'm lacking at the moment.
I also need to practice faces as I just didn't do this one.
Also, the teeth are atrocious and I need to fix that... Colouring is a big thing to work on for me. A lot of things are big things to work on for me...

Although I am not happy enough with this piece to submit it, I've come to understand that something is better than nothing. So I need to try, otherwise I would never start or do anything.
I'm pleased that I've started and done something as it has gotten me slightly more confident to start the pieces in my current big project, therefore things should run more smoothly.
I can see the things I need to improve on whilst doing this and also already looking back at it, and I actually think I can do and work on the things needed to improve. I think a lot of this realisation and being ok with some pieces has a lot to do with my mood, so I'm fine with that really. Again, something is better than nothing, right?

Wow, I definitely have a lot of work to do. Better keep at it and keep on going.

Year 3 BA3a - 3 Month Project

I had completely forgotten about blog posts..
The first 2 weeks of this course have been non-stop work for me, and several things have just slipped my mind. I know I've been doing things but I can't really remember anything that has happened over the last 2 weeks.
The last week (3rd week of the course) I've been doing less work than I would have preferred to do so as some personal issues have resurfaced. I always think it'll last a day or two, then time goes by and it's been a week and it's been the same thing and then I get sad and behind and disappointed.
Anyway, I'm hoping to get back into the work. I'm doing things bit by bit, on a list and just taking it one step at a time - Power through let's go!

It's a shame that this has happened as I was/am looking forward to this project and enjoying it as it's things I want to do and think I have the ability to do so.

My idea for this first 3 month project is to create a battle royale style game, but with classes. I had thought this idea would have been brought out with the release of Fortnite: Battle Royale, but I was sadly mistaken, so I decided to have a go at it myself.
Within this project I'd like to create 3 classes I'd like to implement into this type of game, and at the end of the project, I'd like to have 3 industry standard model sheets. I am hoping that this project will help me refine an art style, and my ability and confidence in drawing and creating characters. Especially with drawing body shapes and practicing proportions - This is something I definitely need to work on.

I spent a lot of time researching the body shapes and types of clothes and weapons I'd like to apply to both female and male versions of the classes before picking which ones to work on.
