Final Week: Model Sheet and Self-Evaluation

I feel like I've gotten better at the colouring aspect of digital painting but there's still a lot to do, but I am happy with how this project turned out overall.

As this is potentially my last project of university, not only of just this year, I would like to use this time to reflect on the experience as a whole. I've watched my classmate complete amazing things, and improve so much, and I feel like I've been at a stand still for most of these 3 years. I understand that you're your own worst critic, and perhaps I didn't put in as much time as others because of the time I've lost due to my mental health but I can't say I haven't gotten better. I may not have improved as fast or as much as others but I have seen growth in my art and in myself through these years.
In these 3 months of this project, my timekeeping, whilst still not good, has improved. My ability to judge how much I can do and get done has improved, and my confidence as improved. I didn't get everything I wanted to do done but I have been more proud of what I've been able to do than I have ever been. I've been able to keep up relatively well with my blog posts and my mood and overall, it's been good for many aspects of my life.

I may not have an idea of what I want to do or be able to get somewhere as soon as others, but I genuinely now believe that I can carry on with art and do well, I'll keep practicing and hopefully doing well.

Final Week: Weapon Iterations

You'll see single blades here as I only need to design one when they're twin blades. I really liked the idea of a curved blade, which would have reflected the fangs of a snake but also the mechanical and rusty-kind-of look that the straight blades gave. I wanted to play with the colours and shape of the blade changing on account of one of the abilities of the rogue doing extra damage so decided to have, instead of a metal blade, a energy powered/formed blade.

I narrowed it down to two knives I liked from the initial studies and created some iterations on those - focusing on the handles and the shape of the blades. There couldn't be too much design on the blade due to their material and changing nature, but I wanted the blade to be a bit more different than a standard one. There were eyes on the handles, furthering the snake likeness of the knives. A button was created on the handle as it was a tech blade - with the energy changing with a press, rather than magic. I picked aspects of previous designs I liked and put them together for the final design.

The direction of the blade was changed due to how the character would hold it. I imagined her jumping up and plunging the curved blade into her enemy, like snake fangs into her prey, and the original blade just didn't work. Here I played with colours and it was actually extremely hard and I don't think I've don't such a good job. I've stayed with a similar colour scheme to the outfit but I think it might be a bit too dull and just doesn't actually have a wow factor, but I didn't know how to make that happen.

BA3b - Week 15 - Character Sheet

I am pretty behind but I'm working and doing things I like and I'm quite happy with, I may have to scrap the hero painting in the environment part so I can do the model sheet better - it just depends on how long it'll take me to paint things but I want to do this well. I am halfway through the weapon iterations and I've started the model sheet.

I am quite happy with this character sheet as it's the first time I've done expressions like this - it could do with some work but I've stepped out of my comfort zone and tried something new and I'm pretty happy about how it's turned out and what I've managed to do, even if it's not as good as it could be, it's built a foundation from which I can have more confidence to do more and improve on. I tried a new style and it's a much different one than I'm used to so I'm glad for the practice on new things.

BA3b - Weeks 11, 12, 13 Recap: Slowly Working - pt. 4 - Hair Colours

I picked the few I liked and coloured the base with 4 of the basic hair colours and then used 5 different colours onto 5 different hairstyles to test out colours combinations and where I'd like to highlight them.

This 6th piece is the hairstyle and colour combination/position I had chosen, plus a darker version of the green I had earlier as I thought the original one was far too bright against the black. This shows the same highlighted areas but just in the different colours I liked to help me make a decision I could then move ahead with. The one I had chosen is the red on black, so there's a connection with the clothing and the type of snake I wanted to represent - green was far too out of place and there would have been too much blue had I chosen a blue/purple highlight.

BA3b - Weeks 11, 12, 13 Recap: Slowly Working - pt. 3 - Hairstyles

Here there are the front and backs of the most basic versions of different hairstyles I wanted my character to have. I experimented with long, short, straight and curly hair with different style fringes, or ponytails etc. I then picked a few and created some small variations of each of them. I wanted to go with something with a plait so it represented a snake, subtly. I wanted a hairstyle which would be easy to add colour to a certain area and make it look good

BA3b - Weeks 11, 12, 13 Recap: Slowly Working - pt. 2 - Clothes

I began with just doing block colours and changing the hues just so I got a bit of an idea of what colour I wanted as my base, then played with the lightness and contrast, while adding more notes for idea and choosing between those.

After picking the shades and small things, I experimented with both colours and adding highlights to the clothes with the different colours.

It was pretty hard to see the details so I made two of them lighter so it would be clearer to me which parts were which and where the patterns were. This was just for the reference to me and also a way to see the different colour combinations and where they were too.
These last two sets of designs were just experiments of where I wanted the clothing highlights to be, I'd mix and match them once I'd seen how it each part looks, again, I created a lighter version to not only see the colours better, but also to see if a generally lighter colour would work.
The back took far too long for me to start doing, so this part took longer than expected and lost me a few weeks but it was pretty simple for the patterns.

I will be posting these week recaps in different parts over the next few days - I am the slowest and worst worker there ever was...

I'm just going to keep working when I can instead of worrying so much about the deadline and getting enough done, and I need to make sure I just work instead of trying to make everything good and perfect the first time around - I should have done this a while ago.
I've received an extension and my new deadline is Tuesday 29th May.

I have spent what it seems like forever getting my life slightly together and back on track and I have done nothing so it here goes. I'll start work on them like a list then roll over anything I need, but this timing would be ideal with what I have left. Oh well, all I can do is try, and I mean at least the weekly blogs are getting done...

BA3b - Week 9 Recap: WHAT IS GOING ON - Half A Week Late

Informal when I should really be more formal over half a week late blog post.

I've emailed Mark asking how to go about getting an extension to this project and if it's the standard way, just to make sure that it's not the same as Extenuating Circumstances, and even though I've fallen quite far behind, I feel like I've done better than before.

I've spent the last week or so in bed with what seems like the flu but probably not that - but I've only just started recovering so I'm going to spend the rest of the week getting my bearings and sorting little things in my life out so it feels comfortable enough to work, both health and environment wise.
It's a shame I've lost so much time but I'm just going to carry on.

BA3b - Week 8 Recap: What Did I Do This Week...

I started doing the colours but it's not enough to show. The past week as been very strange - I haven't had any motivation to any work but I've not been sad or bad really, until the last few days. I did do some work unrelated to the project so that's better than nothing and I'm slightly back into the groove of working on something.
I did something that was small and I was relatively proud of because it was my first time doing said thing then was full of motivation for about 2 days and then it all went away and I spent about 2 days in bed afterwards because I felt like it was bad again so...

BA3b - Week 7 Recap: Clothes, Weapons, Hair Iterations and Colours

Week 7 - Clothes, Weapons, Hair Iterations and Colours

The pieces above are combinations of the previous designs - but in full. So these will be the actual designs I could be using as finished products. I then further defined which areas I wanted as as snake-skin like material and which areas should be a more clean, solid type. I figured out where things should go, the abilities and extra things so I now have a clearer idea.
I then did a similar thing with the colours and types of patterns in the second piece below. I made it clear to myself that these colours exist in such a way due to the dark background I'm using.

Due to the slowness of my workings and the small amount of work that I've done what with the losing of days, I will have to just adjust my schedule quickly - this is a guideline and is only here for me really.

BA3b - Week 6 Recap: Clothes, Weapons, Hair Iterations and Colours

Week 6 - Clothes, Weapons, Hair Iterations and Colours

It is another unfortunate occurrence that I've lost half of this week but I'll just keep at it and see how it goes.

Above are small iterations of the capes and small designs. I drew inspiration from snakes, in particular the Cobra. I picked the design which I preferred most and reminded me of the creature. I wanted the additions to be subtle but not basically invisible.

I then mapped out the areas of the clothing I could possibly cover with a different material - perhaps one which is more scaly than the rest. The front and back here, unlike the first two pieces, do not necessarily correspond to each other, nor do most of the parts on one figure - I just started to cover any areas I thought might look interesting and then work from there. Some were far too much and some didn't make sense or look nice - I still wanted to make it rather subtle.
The next set of designs I'm going to post will have the best of the ones I have tested out. I will be grabbing aspects of the better ideas and putting together into a few designs I would be happy with using.

Colour scheme wise I have thought about taking some colours and patterns from both the Black Mamba and the Inland Taipan snakes. She must be stealth and fast, which both these creatures are.

BA3b - Week 5 Recap: Clothes, Weapons, Hair Iterations and Colours

Week 5 - Clothes, Weapons, Hair Iterations and Colours

It looks like I'll have to extend this task another week as I somehow lost this one completely as well. This will be my 2nd week of the 3 that I've had "freed" up, so I'm actually praying that this will go fine.

There are no pictures I can upload for this entry, but at least I'm keeping up with the posts. I had a bit of a heart attack thinking I had lost a week's worth of work but it's okay I found the file again.

I've found 3 types of snakes I'd like to draw inspiration from -
Inland Taipan - the deadliest snake, Black Mamba - the fastest snake and the Cobra.
I will be turning the figures I have and designing the clothes and colours - hopefully done by Thursday. Then the hair and colours on Friday, and weapons and colours on the weekend, We'll see.

I may need to take this out - 12/03/2018 - 18/03/2018 - Character and Weapon Animations.
Not sure yet, but here is the revised version of the production dates.

BA3b - Week 4 Recap: Clothes, Weapons, Hair Iterations and Colours

Week 4 - Clothes, Weapons, Hair Iterations and Colours

This is has been the second half of the two week section of defining the clothes, weapons and hair - the designs and colours. I haven't even done a third of this list.
The next three pieces of work show my process of refining the clothes.
I started off with the idea of the character being stealth and a rogue - focusing on clothing which would not limit her movement, but also look good and protect her. The high boots seemed to be a must, with tight fitting clothes in general.

I wanted to try some clothing with a skirt to perhaps show she is still a child, or a girly girl at heart, despite her violent and deadly nature. I liked the skirt idea, but I had to be careful that it didn't remind me too much of Sombra, which one design did. I experimented a cloak on my initial set of depends but the set above shows my first two serious designs incorporating a cloak.
In the set of designs below, I took what I thought was the best of the 2nd piece and swapped the skirts for trousers to see what it would look like.

Having decided that I preferred the skirt over the trousers, I set about drawing very small differences onto 8 of the figures after, including where fabric might be missing, the designs, and any protective gear the character may have on. For now, I've decided to go for the top right-most design.
Below are some accessories I started to do for the character but found near to no inspiration for this, so I've put it on hold for now and will be focusing more on other aspects of the visual design.

During this week, I also had a meeting with Mark and he basically made me see that I cannot make a new hero for Overwatch, however I can create a character inspired by Overwatch. This means that I can use the same type of idea and art style but I cannot say it is for Overwatch. It did come as a slight blow to me, though I do not know why as it actually doesn't really change what I'm doing and if anything lightens my work load. Instead of having 3 weeks at the end leeway for additional work for how I would incorporate my design into an Overwatch environment and website, I get 3 weeks 'extra' to work more on my core project.
As well as the meeting, we had a talk from Nick Carver who showed us his work and gave us advice on how to proceed with a lot of things. I took some notes but in my meeting with Mark, he really hammered home that it would be useful for me to choose a thing or animal which may share characteristics of anything I'm designing. I can't say I remember the last time I tried that so I'm going to try that now that I have a rough idea of what type or shape of clothes I like.

I will be using this next week to continue with the "Clothes, Weapons, Hair Iterations and Colour" section of my project and starting on adapting the clothes. It was suggested to me by someone to draw inspiration from the snake, so I'll try that.

Ba3b - Week 3 Recap: Clothes, Weapons, Hair Iterations and Colours

Week 3 - Clothes, Weapons, Hair Iterations and Colours

This task spans between two weeks but I said I would do a weekly recap and although it is late, it's close enough to Sunday. I had been very busy the past week and during the weekend.

I started off doing some studies with slightly posture changes until I found some I liked. These helped me with body proportions and gave me an idea of what things would look like should I use these poses.

Once I lined up the ones I liked, I set out fleshing out the figures, then narrowing these down further.

Above is the three figures I had chosen. These gave me an idea of the hero's personality and could be used on the Character Sheet. I changed the model to a more T shape so it would have been easier to see the designs of the clothes for the hero. I have created some already but would like to keep them all together so they'll be included in the next blog post.

BA3b - Week 1 and Week 2 Recap: Elevator Pitch and Character Concept Background

Week 3 is currently in process and I'm not where I would like to be currently. This current section of the work spans between 2 weeks but I'll get into it in my post on Sunday for my weekly recap I would like to do and hopefully stick to. My goal at the moment is to stick to my plan on a weekly basis instead of writing down each thing I'd like to achieve per day for the week as it didn't seem to work well for me for the last unit, BA3a.

I had missed the first week due to not being able to get back to Norwich from my family home and was supposed to present my elevator pitch on the Wednesday but I didn't know where to go and what to do. I attended my session on Thursday but couldn't find anyone to talk to. Since then I have been bedridden for about a week due to illness but as my computer is very close to my desk I have been able to move from the bed to the PC in order to carry on with my work. I will be looking to do my elevator pitch when I can get back, which would be week 4 by then. The issue with this is a huge worry that everything I have been doing is wrong, which was a problem in the last unit.

Week 1 - Elevator Pitch
Pipeline Production - Character Design

I really want to pursue Character Design which is why I have chosen it as my basis again for my second unit. Already starting these slides shows how much more excited and prepared for BA3b I am than I was for BA3b: there is more information and planning, there's set goals and timescales and it looks generally nicer. On the first slide I have given the information and reasoning behind why I wanted to do this for this unit, I have created clear outcomes for both essential and additional pieces to submit and what needs to be included in each piece.
On the second slide I have written down my schedule for the upcoming weeks in what I want to do. The plan is per week and I believe I have given myself sufficient time to complete the tasks I have set for myself in each week. Instead of planning out each day, I have just written what I should be doing in the week. This way it puts less pressure on myself if I have a bad day or I can't get myself up to do them, it won't be carrying it over. I have found that I already work better and happy with this but it is only the third week, so we'll see how I deal with being behind on these things in this week. I am going into this BA3b with a lot more confidence and direction and it feels good. I just hope to keep up with blog posts as well as the weeks, as I have also detailed the things I would like to include in the blog posts on the second slide. This post should be the only one with 2 weeks in the recap - fingers crossed!

I would love to be able to do the bonus pieces so it all becomes a "set" and look more official and nice but they're down as bonus pieces so I don't have to pressure of having to do it. I have allocated time for them but should any weeks have to roll over, I have given myself 3 weeks at the end for that.

Week 2 - Connection to the Overwatch World
Background, body shape, Weapons and-Playstyle

In the 2 slides pictured below I have included examples of the type of thing I want to produce - a "cover" reference image, a full body painting with assets and weapons. The T style rotation of the body is rendered and turned so I won't be able to include that but I may be able to do something like that. I don't particularly want to put too much pressure on myself has that would mean I wouldn't be able to achieve anything I'd want to.

The slide underneath contains some of my research as to why this new hero would turn to the organisation Talon. I have gathered information as to why the known 5 heroes in Overwatch had become associated with Talon in hope that I gain inspiration for my hero. I researched what Talon was about and stood for and what had happened to each hero causing them to turn to Talon for what they needed. Although the slide has not been finished (no writings for Doomfist and little for Sombra) I had gained enough of an idea from the other heroes and the general idea and actions of Talon.

I may not have decided on a few things - where this hero is from or their real/agent name but I have managed to figure out the back story to the hero, the gender, and how she may be played. The first slide features notes and references to Widowmaker's animated short and what the other heroes associated with Talon look like. I had written notes on how she will be played, the resources she has and her personality and in the next slide, I wrote all the information out fully like it would appear on the website. The abilities are not set in stone but the enough of the idea is there for me to be able to start creating the character design - what they're like, what they wear and the devices they carry. Of course these abilities are not what it would look like on the site as they are more note-like than I'd like but I was spending too much time trying to figure it out and it's something I can do if I get to the site section of the project.

One small thing to note which I quite like is just the consistency in the colours and design of the slides so far - it looks cleaner and more serious/official and therefore rather comforts me and motivates me strangely. I hope to carry this on for the information and drawn pieces and then when I submit, or post it on any portfolio-like websites, it will be more consistent and professional too.
